Speaker: Because, ah, they had to have something. Just a second, I'll be right with you. I have to think of supper in the morning. Interviewer: Mm-hm. Speaker: My husband thinks I'm mental, but- well I said, "Well if you didn't think of supper in the morning- Interviewer: You wouldn't have anything on t-- pl-- table at night!

Interviewer: What about fishing, did you go fishing? Speaker: No, no we um- we um, dad was always, I think too busy on the farm and because he was milking and- and in those days, when we're growing up, he would eat supper first and then milk the cows after. When I started farming with him ah, full-time in nineteen-seventy-five, ah, then we switched and we would have finished, milked the cows and then we were done for the day, have supper and then we were done for the day. So your evenings were free.

Anyway, she took such a liking to us, we were there an hour. She invited us for a stay for supper, and we had drinks and coffee, and ah and wonderful ah-

Her mother is still living and she's ninety-two and she lives in a house in Manilla. We're taking her our tonight for supper 'cause she was ninety-two yesterday. So I- I've had a great life ah.

... I remember dad buying fish at the door from some men that I knew and he knew and ah, every winter they'd come knocking on the door about supper-time and they had white fish and herring and some trout but ah, mother didn't like the trout too well so we- and I didn't. White fish and herring were really nice fish.

And then was usually a roast for supper on a Sunday night. And then there was leftovers Monday and maybe Tuesday. And then that was baloney and wieners and sausages after that. Until next Sunday when you got a decent meal again, or a good meal or a good feed. There was never any shortage of food.

Interviewer: So what did you guys do for fun? Speaker: Fun? After supper, I'd go hunting groundhogs.

Um, ah, and then New-Year's we'd have a big New-Year's supper at my ah, aunt and uncle's.

Speaker 2: Yeah. But it was called a brick. (laughs) Speaker: Yeah, yeah. Of ice cream and- so that was- you-know, for supper that night, they'd, you-know, open it and cut it in slices and we each got our little slice of ice cream.

So we got back to the inn and had poached salmon or something like that for supper and it was really good. And Ethan was with us. Ethan-MacDougall.

Speaker: Took the train every day. W-- Trai- well there was lots of trains going back and forth. Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker: So they could- they would be down there and- in time to get to school in the morning and- and they'd be back here you-know by after supper. Interviewer: There were a lot of trains.

Speaker: We talked on the phone a little bit. Interviewer: Yeah. Speaker: And then ah and when I- I said well we'll- we'll go out for supper. And we went to the Admiral-Inn didn't we?

Um, I have certainly seen a lot of changes in- in lifestyle. Um technology is taking over, and, ah, when we were on the farm, we always had meals as breakfast, dinner, and supper, because you worked your breakfast off, you needed a big dinner, and you worked your dinner off and you had your big supper, and today it's breakfast, lunch and dinner-

You were eating for your supper- ... You were working for your supper. ... Or the supper in fall maybe, you-know growing- whether we garden or whatever? ... You-know? That lesson could be taught to a lot of them now-a-days couldn't it?

... so there's a-- a lot of grain and ah, uncle-Gregor said, "Well why don't you just stay in the granary and just kind of keep, keep it shovelled back" and-so-on, so that was fine. But by the time they were ready to go in for supper, ah, I was sick, all the dust. ... So my dad said, "Well just sit on the front lawn incase your stomach turns" and-so-on.

Speaker: So, you cooked a dinner at noon for these- Interviewer: I-- in the heat. Speaker: Thrashing men and you cooked another dinner at supper time for them. And you baked, you- you always fed them pies for dessert. And so my dad did that until the- the harvest was finished.

Interviewer: So your dinner would be fairly late, would it? Speaker: No, we learned to move fast. (laughs) Interviewer: (laughs) Speaker: If you were hungry, you moved. (laughs) Interviewer: Yeah, yeah. Interviewer 2: Or w-- or would you call it supper? Speaker: We called it supper. Interviewer: Supper. Right. Speaker: Dinner was at noon.

And, ah, so grandpa got up in the morning and got dressed and came into our part of the house for breakfast and then he worked all day with my father and had his lunch or dinner and supper at night. So grandma didn't have to get any meals during the day. She got the meals on Sunday for grandpa. But that was it.

... and then he ah went to the motors, he was working at the motors. They come home this night and had supper and he said he wasn't feeling very good and all of a sudden, he just toppled over and he was gone. He had a heart attack.

It was a big journey, yeah. They left here 'bout six in the morning. We'd be down there by shortly after nine or so, and we'd work 'til three or four. (inc) either take us to a restaurant or somewhere for- to give us our supper to come back home. There was a couple times there was a church just down from where she lived had supper so we went there for supper and ah, and she said they had an ice-storm down there too the year after or so when we had ours ...
