As- and it's the same thing when you go over the ah, bi-pass now. Kirkland-Land-Gold, there's all that volume basically. Kind-of and I don't know if this is true is coming out of the stopes and the shafts and the cages ah, not the cages, ah the um, the workings from underground. So all that stuff you see above ground is come from below ground.

And ah, well you ha-- I-mean the whole town was built on mines. I-mean nothing but tunnels and stopes (laughs) and-everything under there eh?

"Do you mind the time- do you mind the time when such and such a thing happened?" And ah, and then I heard him use the expression storm-stayed which I'd never heard which I'd read about in the- in Peter-Gzowski.

He was telling a- a story about one time, he went somewhere and got storm-stayed. I was just totally amazed that I've never heard the word before and then all of a sudden it was just being used in normal conversation.

Well Peter-Gzowski ah, on C-B-C had um, ah- he wrote books about his morning show and one of them was on the topic of storm-stayed and- and of course people phoned in from all across the country. And I was reading that book and then a week and a half or maybe two weeks later, uncle-Jimmy dropped in...

Interviewer: ... how was the teaching done at that time? Speaker: Well if they didn't behave themselves they got the strap and I remember one time my baby brother ... they brought him up to Mr. Symons' room with some other little boys and he got the strap. Well I thought to myself he's going to strap my baby brother and so, he wasn't, he told me after he wasn't going to but he was scaring these little kids you see and he made them put their hands out ...

Interviewer: ... how was the teaching done at that time? Interviewer: … Um, what sort of disciplinary measures were there in the schools, at that time? Speaker: Well an elementary school of-course you were ah allowed ah to use the strap, as ah- as any kind, firm and judicious parent would use it. In secondary school, I have known the principal to use the strap.

If you wouldn't get the strap you didn't like it because when you went home they'd ask you, how much did you get today, how many straps.

They quit strapping them in Scotland just a few years ago and they had to bring it back again. The kids just don't, won't, obey a thing, you can't strap them and they had to bring it back you-know. They liked the strap there you-know but they only hit you once, over here they hit them a lot of times, don't they. Over there one's all you wanted, a three finger strap and when they used to just give us one.

The only thing we didn't like was the schoolmarm had a cane and it came across you knuckles. I didn't like that, I preferred the strap.

But there was one boy I- I- I gave the strap to oftener than I did another over at Queen-Mary. He was a young villain. And ah- but ah outside of that I- I didn't ah- the strap was the last thing as far as I was concerned but ah I did give it at times when I thought they should have it.

... if anyone dis-behaved they uh, or used uh wrong language, she would take them back to the sink and she would uh, ask them to wash their mouth out with a little soap. ... And um, I can't remember now what- oh, she did use the strap. ... No, not too often. As I say, she, she uh, did get the respect that she usually wanted.

Interviewer: Do they still use um- like do they still use the whip and-things-like-that? Speaker: Well the strap. Interviewer: The strap I meant, yeah, not the whip. Do they still use it at your school? ... Do you think that's a good ide-- Speaker: Well only if you're really bad. Like if you're in a bunch of fights or-something-like-that.

... she said, "Mike, stand up!" She said, "What are you doing?' He said, "I am rolling boulders, up the aisle." She said, "You stay after four." Now whether she gave him the strap, whether she just lectured him sternly, or what happened, but Mike never come back to school.

Interviewer: What was your school-life like, in- growing up in Toronto, was- were the teachers very strict, or? Speaker: Yeah back then, it was, ah yeah they got the strap and Interviewer: really the strap, that something Speaker: oh yeah, you got- you got the strap, corporal punishment was a normal, every day thing

Interviewer: ... did people get in some trouble there too? Speaker: Oh yeah, that was the- used to be uh, uh- they used to be able to strap you on the hand, so it was no- no problem, and if you pulled your hand away, you got two for one. (laughing)
