Well that doesn 't work 'cause they don 't- they don 't listen, they don 't care. Like I 'm not saying they should bring back the strap and all-of-that and mean I- ... Well some of them- some of them deserve something you-know ...

Interviewer: What would happen if you did something bad? Speaker: Um, well it was still in the time of- of, ah, school-strapping but that didn 't happen, very, very rarely.

Oh yeah we got the strap or- I never got the strap though I did get my hand put behind my back because I was a left hander and they changed me to right, and that 's why I didn 't like school.

And ah, I personally, ah- I know a lot of people don 't agree with me, that I feel that they should bring the strap back into the school. ... Because the kids 'd think twice before they 'd do things.

My grandmother 's a principal ah school teacher in Pickering and I remember she used to give the strap. Oh yeah.

Interviewer: W-- you would have to get sent to the principal first? Speaker Yup. You 'd probably get a warning then if you got sent back the second time was when you got the strap.

Interviewer: Did you have- what- in school, schools were different then. Had the strap and things like that. Speaker: Oh yeah, got- yeah there was the strap. There was ah- also played um, marching tunes on a- on a victrola in the hallway when you march in from- into class in the morning in from recess, in at noon.

Interviewer: Was there punishment if you stepped out of line, kind-of-thing? Speaker: No. Nobody stepped out of line. Interviewer: No, they knew better. Speaker: Um, yeah. I did get the strap twice. ... Once unjustifiably. Only from Mr-H too. Oh no, there 's a man- a vice-principal named Mr-B. He administered the strap. Forgotten that. Interviewer: Do you remember what you did? ... Speaker: Talking. ... It was the guys behind me ...

Interviewer: Did you remember incidents of people getting punished in school with you-know the strap or something? Speaker: (laughs) I was never got the strap. Oh yes there was BT, he was a holy-terror. He was bad mouth, he was a holy-terror. Enough about him. Interviewer: Do you remember something he did that he got the strap for? Speaker: No, he was just a bad mouth, I was afraid of him.

Speaker: You see- you can 't do that, yeah and that 's the other thing, like we used to have the strap in school, that 's like the- the even in school like what you can and can 't do, like the abu-- not the abuse but- you can 't lift a finger to a child. ... Whereas now we- the strap was out there when we were younger. You know- ... There- there 's no discipline. ... You can 't discipline a child ...

Interviewer: Um, did they give the strap out? Did they do the strap? Speaker: I guess so but I- I don 't think I got the strap at school, but I got the strap at home sometimes.

Speaker: I mean that 's what discipline is. A lot of discipline is to frighten you into towing the line. Interviewer: What sorts of things would get a boy in trouble enough to get the strap? Speaker: Um, stealing, destruction, it had to be pretty bad, fighting. But they didn 't use knives.

Interviewer: Was it different in school as well ah strap, and more discipline and more Speaker: Yeah the strap was it. Interviewer: Did you ever get the strap? Speaker: No. Very few girls did. I got spanked once, by Miss-B, but Interviewer: Do you remember what you did? Speaker: Talking in school. (laughing) Interviewer: ... Do you remember boys getting the strap though? Speaker: Yeah, it was a big procedure, because they would bring a great big- what seemed like a huge black leg-- ledger and they 'd write your name in, and they would have the strap, and they would strap the child in front of the class, which I don 't think was necessary.

Interviewer: Did they use the strap when you were in school? Speaker: Was there the strap when I was in school. I never- I never received it and I don 't ever remember hearing anybody having got the- got the belt for doing anything.

Interviewer: Can you remember any like terrible [teachers]? Speaker: Well there were few guys with l-- th-- at that time the strap still existed and you-know p-- Interviewer: Did you get the strap? Speaker: I didn 't get the strap. I got spanked once by a teacher, which would be entirely inappropriate today, but um you- know some of them had anger-management-problems, let 's just put it that way.

No, they 're afraid to (inc) and they don 't do the strap anymore, and I 've had clients that said "Boy, once I got that strap, I was afraid to get it again."

... I finally said well, "What do the letters T-T-C stand for?" Ah, the answer of course was Toronto-toilet-cleaners. You-know it was a kid 's joke, the- the whole class just roared with laughter, so she ordered me out of the class into the hall and then she came out and gave me the strap.

... the guy behind me, I d-- he prob-- he probably did it- stepped on my heel. And of course I stumbled out of the line, so the teacher grabbed me, I got the strap for that.

Interviewer: And when you were in school they used punishment as well. Speaker: I got strapped four times when I was in school.
